3rd Grade-Week 3 The Earth's Moon

3rd Lab Session Week

This week we will learn about the phases of the Moon and why the Moon looks different during the 4 week lunar cycle. 

Here's a link to a great website to review the lunar phases.

Here's a link of the daily moon phase.

NASA launched LADEE (Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer, pronounced like "laddie") which is a robot on its way to orbit the moon to gather detailed information about the lunar atmosphere, conditions near the surface and environmental influences on lunar dust. Video and pictures of the launch can be seen at nasa.gov/ladee.

Concept: The Moon
Class Reading: Read pgs 185-199.
Investigation: What are the phases of the Moon?

·      Phases of the Moon-waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, third quarter, waning crescent, new moon
·      Brain Pop- “Moon Phases”
·      Phases of the moon worksheets-draw the different types of moons, label the moons

2nd Lab Session Week

We will be spending the week learning about planets, how they rotate while they orbit the Sun, their moons, and other bodies in our solar system.

Concept: The Night Sky
Class Reading: Read pgs 180-184 & 206-209.
Investigation: What objects do you see in the night sky?

4d. Students know that Earth is one of several planets that orbit the Sun and that the Moon orbits Earth.
4c. Students know telescopes magnify the appearance of some distant objects in the sky, including the Moon and the planets. The number of stars that can be seen through telescopes is dramatically greater than the number that can be seen by the unaided eye.
