5th Grade-Week 1 Solar System


1st Lab Week
Concept: The Solar System

Objective: Students will learn what objects make up out solar system and what  keeps the planets orbiting around the Sun.

Homework: Solar System Crossword Puzzle and Parent Letter signed

5. The solar system consists of planets and other bodies that orbit the Sun in predictable paths. As a basis for understanding this concept:
5a. Students know the Sun, an average star, is the central and largest body in the solar system and is composed primarily of hydrogen and helium.
5b. Students know the solar system includes the planet Earth, the Moon, the Sun, eight other planets and their satellites, and smaller objects, such as asteroids and comets.
5c. Students know the path of a planet around the Sun is due to the gravitational attraction between the Sun and the planet.

  1. Our solar system is so fascinating. The students should enjoy learning about the different planets and their uniqueness from one another.

      Students learn more about the other planets in 3rd grade. The focus in first is that the Earth gets heat and light from the Sun.

  3. Re: Quiz question #wp23 b. The pull on the ball by the string and hand is centripidal force. It would be analogous to gravity in a planetary system. But then it causes the ball to complete a revolution. Which answer were you looking for?

  4. Hello, Mr. Gantt. I am Ricardo in #16. My mother is typing my comment for me. I really like the picture of sun. It looks really hot and strong. And Halley's comet looks shiny. I wonder if I can see this at night time. Can we see it?

    1. Unfortunately, we cannot see Halley's Comet until 2061. I got to see it when I was in 4th grade!
